It started in 2019 when founder Joe Carver returned from a Nashville food trip with one thought burned into his mind — Cincinnati deserves this. He'd tasted hot chicken at a small counter-service spot and knew right then that his hometown needed its own version, elevated with fresh ingredients and layered spice blends he'd been perfecting for years.
"I wasn't opening a restaurant — I was starting a fire. A delicious, mouth-numbing, come-back-for-more kind of fire."
With a modest kitchen on Short Vine St, a handful of family recipes, and a name inspired by the only honest answer to "how are you feeling?" — Hangry Joe's opened its doors in March 2019. Within months, word spread across Cincinnati about hangry joe's hot chicken, and the lines started forming before we even unlocked the doors.
Today, Hangry Joe's is a beloved institution on the Cincinnati food scene — drawing in regulars, visitors, and first-timers who all leave with the same expression: wide eyes, a little sweat, and an immediate craving to come back.
Every dish, every decision, every day — guided by a commitment to bold food and a better experience for every guest who walks through our doors.
We never cut corners on spice, quality, or freshness. Every piece of hangry joe's hot chicken is seasoned, marinated, and cooked to deliver maximum flavor impact.

From a single kitchen on Short Vine to Cincinnati's most-talked-about hot chicken spot — here's how hangry joes grew.
Founder Joe Carver returns from Nashville with a fire in his belly and a recipe notebook full of heat-level experiments. He spends a year developing Hangry Joe's signature spice blend in his home kitchen.
Hangry Joe's officially opens at 2600 Short Vine St, Cincinnati. The first week sells out three days in a row. The chicken sandwich earns an immediate cult following across Cincinnati neighborhoods.
Just nine months after opening, hangry joe's hot chicken is named Best New Restaurant by Cincinnati Magazine, catapulting the brand into citywide recognition.
When dine-in restrictions hit, Hangry Joe's pivoted swiftly to carry-out and delivery. Community support was overwhelming — daily sell-outs continued throughout the year.
Responding to demand for events, Hangry Joe's launches a full catering program. Within months, the catering team is booked out for corporate events, weddings, and festivals across the Cincinnati metro area.
The menu grows to 40+ items including tenders, sliders, loaded fries, and seasonal specials. The "Inferno" heat level debuts — only 3% of customers finish without crying (affectionately).
Hangry Joe's serves 50,000+ customers annually, maintains a 4.9-star average, and continues setting the bar for bold, authentic hot chicken in the United States. The best chapters are still ahead.
Every incredible meal starts with incredible people. Our team brings passion, skill, and a whole lot of heat to everything they do at hangry joes.
